Beginnings

Galerie Alain Le Gaillard

January 17 — 20, 2024

Galerie Le Minotaure

Featuring six artist’s proofs inspired by the first art, nature, this exhibition calls upon the elemental essence of lava as a nod to the beginnings of life on earth.

Flood of Color

In this exhibition, the studio showcased six artist’s proofs in Lava from the Outside Within series in conversation with a set of constructivist and biomorphic paintings from the 1920s and 30s from Galerie Alain Le Gaillard and Galerie Le Minotaure. Accompanying the exhibition’s debut, anthropologist Anne Varichon provided opening remarks on the profound significance of color throughout human history. Through the lens of Sylvie Johnson’s work, Varichon’s talk explores how color can evoke memory, emotion, and a sense of connection with the world. In her words, Johnson’s artistry is depicted as a bridge between past and present, infusing everyday objects with beauty and meaning, and inviting contemplation of the timeless essence of color.

Color doesn’t satisfy hunger, it doesn’t warm you up, it doesn’t allow you to kill or even defend yourself. But it has been with humanity since its earliest beginnings—because it’s a sign.

Anne Varichon, Anthropologist
