Engaging the gaze, body, and space, the artists’ work—from rugs and sculptures to modeled garments—celebrates textile pieces through fashion and fine art. The unique disciplines demonstrate how textile art is integrated into everyday life through the clothes we wear, the walls we cover, and the floors we walk on.
From Johnson’s use of mouliné wool to Wright’s hand embroidery on painted canvas to the fashion designer’s blend of sequins and mesh, the contrasting layers and materials speak a sophisticated and diverse sensorial language.
Merida Studio aims to uplift textile art in its gallery spaces. Through partnerships with Chelsea Art Group and Pink Maison, it seeks to show the various forms that textile art can take while displaying the multiple ways their rugs communicate with other art. The collective curation pushes textiles beyond the work’s function and presents each piece as a medium for creative dialogue.
